Sri Lankan Refugees Gather for Vazhi Thunai Maatha Feast in Sirumalai, Irendellaiparai, Dindigul
TAMIL NADU – On 17th August 2024 Saturday evening, Catholic faithful from Irendellaiparai, Dindigul came together to celebrate the Vazhi Thunai Maatha feast in Sirumalai, Irendellaiparai division. The event drew participants from various parishes of the Dindigul diocese, with a significant number of attendees being Sri Lankan refugees.
The festivities commenced with the hoisting of the Marian flag by Fr. Thomas CMF, the Parish Priest, followed by a Eucharistic celebration. Despite heavy rains prior to the Mass, attendees reported that the weather cleared during the service, which many interpreted as a sign of divine protection.
Participants from different locations expressed their enthusiasm and devotion, with many sharing testimonies of Mary’s intercession in their lives. The celebration served not only as a religious observance but also as a means to strengthen relationships within the community.
The event concluded with a communal meal, known as Annathanam, sponsored by the Sri Lankan refugees. This gesture highlighted the spirit of unity and shared faith among the attendees.
Local church officials noted that the feast brought together people from diverse backgrounds, fostering a sense of community among the Sri Lankan refugees and local parishioners. The successful celebration, overcoming weather challenges, left many participants feeling uplifted and spiritually renewed.
This annual feast continues to be a significant event in the religious calendar of the Dindigul diocese, particularly for the Sri Lankan refugee community, reinforcing their faith and cultural ties in their adopted home.
