Origin and Background :

Claret Bhavan, Karumathur in Madurai is the first Claretian House started in Tamil Nadu. This was the centre of Claretian Mission in Tamil Nadu under the Province of Germany. It was popularly known as the mother house from the beginning. Srilanka was also part of this mission.

In the year 1987, the Tamil Nadu Mission of the German Province was raised to the status of a Delegation, dependent on the German Province in the name of Indo-Srilankan Delegation. In 1992, the General Government raised the Indo-Sri Lankan Delegation, to the status of an Independent Delegation.

On 9 th November 1993 the General Government announced the elevation of the Indian Delegation into the status of a Province in Formation. The name of the organism was changed again and this time it was named as “Madras Province of the Claretians”. The Curia was functioning from Claret Bhavan, Karumathur till 1994.

On 11 June 1994 the Provincial Curia was shifted from Claret Bhavan, Karumathur to AJ3, 4 th Avenue, Anna Nagar, Chennai – 600 040. Then, the Claretian Provincial House was established as the new community of the Province with the juridical status of House with the specific mission of Provincial Curia.

In April 1999, the residence was changed from Annanagar to West Tambaram . The newly constructed Provincial house was officially inaugurated on 23 rd August 2002 . Eminent Cardinal Simon Lourdu Samy blessed the house, and it was opened by Rev. Fr. S. Maria Arul CMF, the Vicar General. The Provincial Curia is situated in the jurisdiction of the Chengelput diocese.
